A Pre-Hispanic Mayan bath also known as Temazcal.
Zumpul-Che is part of a traditional pre-Hispanic Maya ritual. It consists in receiving a cleansing steam bath.
It involves two fundamental aspects: the spiritual, representing the return to mother earth’s womb that includes the four elements: earth, water, air and fire to purify and harmonize the mind, body and spirit.
The second aspect is therapeutic, as it helps to eliminate toxins, stimulating the glandular system and regeneration of the body cells.
The ancient Mayas used Zumpul-Che to purify their body and spirit, looking to please their gods before a ceremonial.
Vestiges of those ancient Mayan baths have been found at Palenque, Chichén Itzá, Tikal, Tulum, Dzibilchaltun, Toniná, Piedras Negras, Xcambo and Joya de Cerén.
