What Are the Best Sights in Chichen Itza?

1. Temple of Kukulkan

In the center of a large open field sits the grand Temple of Kukulkan. Often referred to as "El Castillo," this is the most widely recognized feature of the ancient Mayan city. The pyramid-like structure is one of the best sights in Chichen Itza and even showcases many references to the Mayan calendar. Perhaps most fascinating are the feathered serpent shadows that appear along the edge of the temple at sunrise and sunset on the days of the spring and autumn equinoxes.

2. Temple of the Warriors

Amongst the monumental structures of this astonishing ancient Mayan city is the Temple of the Warriors. Also known as the Temple of the Thousand Columns, this structure is considered one of the architectural gems of Latin America. The columns represent armed men, and each one is engraved with the images of priests and warriors.

3. Sacred Cenote

Although the Sacred Cenote was only used for ceremonial purposes, it is likely that the large natural well is what gave Chichen Itza its name. In fact, despite the murky water that fills the naturally formed sinkhole, over the years, the Sacred Cenote has yielded various artifacts including, gold, obsidian, shells, pottery, jade, and even the bones of approximately 200 humans, that were thrown into the well as a form of sacrifice.
