Visit of Queen Elizabeth II of England and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to Uxmal in 1975

Jan, 15, 2026 Uxmal

On February 25, 1975, the British monarchs arrived in Yucatán from Oaxaca and were greeted at Mérida airport by Governor Carlos Loret de Mola and his wife. The ceremony included music from Orquesta Típica Yukalpetén and applause from 10,000 people waving English and Mexican flags.

Following their arrival and protocol ceremony, the UK monarchs and the governor of Yucatán toured Mérida by Cadillac before heading to Uxmal. The governor highlighted the enduring agricultural traditions in Mayan communities, rooted in a culture dating back 900 years.

Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, was welcomed at the pre-Columbian city of Uxmal at 5:30 p.m. by the English archaeologist Sir Erick Thompson, who provided valuable insights about the site while they enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

At 6:30 p.m., the royal couple arrived at Hacienda Uxmal Plantation & Museum Hotel with their entourage. The manager, Manuel Ceballos, and his wife, Sofia Otero, greeted them. After a brief rest, the monarchs had tea and an egg snack on the terrace. At 8:20 p.m., gifts were exchanged between the royal house and Yucatan's government.

The ceremony at the Nun’s Quadrangle of Uxmal was followed by a formal dinner attended by 1,250 guests, who acknowledged the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

During the official inauguration of the light and sound show in Uxmal, the British monarchs were joined at the honour table by Professor Gaspar Antonio Xiu, a descendant of the Xiu family, historically recognised for ruling Uxmal over ten centuries.

At Uxmal, the governor delivered an opening address that emphasised the significant contributions made by English explorers and archaeologists to the study of Uxmal and other Maya sites. Notable individuals mentioned included Frederick Catherwood, Alfred Maudslay, Percival, Adela Catherine Breton, Ian Graham, and Sir Eric Thompson.

Queen Elizabeth II expressed gratitude for the hospitality and praised the impressive archaeological remains, calling them unparalleled among ancient cities. The evening featured a gala dinner with the Yucatecan bolero "Peregrina" and a performance of "The Legend of the Dwarf of Uxmal," which describes a monarch credited with building the Temple of the Magician through special powers.

A brief 15-minute rain paused the festivities before Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the "Light and Sound Show." The show recounted Uxmal’s history, including its temple construction inspired by astronomers, local conflicts, and eventual abandonment due to migration.

On the morning prior to their departure, the monarchs dined in their suite at the Hacienda Uxmal Hotel before proceeding to Tizimin, where they officiated the inauguration of the "Queen's Zoo" and a fruit processing facility.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, spent 22 hours and 55 minutes in Yucatán.

Mayaland extends its gratitude to the British royal family for selecting the Hacienda Uxmal Plantation & Museum Hotel as their accommodation during their visit to Uxmal on February 25 and 26, 1975.

The organisation regards its involvement in this significant moment in the history of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United Kingdom as an honourable privilege.
