Everything You Need to Know About the Governor’s Palace in Uxmal

Mar, 18, 2020 Uxmal

The ancient Mayan pyramids of Uxmal are some of the most critical pre-Columbian structures in the world. Out of all the pyramids that were recovered from the jungle, the Uxmal pyramids were, by far, found in the best condition. Governor’s Palace in Uxmal is a gleaming example of stunning Mayan architecture. Discover it during your next visit to the Yucatán!

What You Need to Know About the Governor’s Palace in Uxmal

The Governor’s Palace, or “Palacio del Gobernador,” is one of Mexico’s most prized ancient findings. The three-part, Puuc-style pyramid was found in pristine condition along with its surrounding city. We have everything you need to know about exploring the Governor’s Palace and the ancient city of Uxmal during your next visit!

  • The City’s Importance

Uxmal literally means “built three times.” The city’s name represents the past, present, and future and represents the stories of the ancient Mayans. The city was one of the few that survived the fall of the Mayan kingdom during 900 AD.

Governor’s Palace was built as a shrine to the Gods and held the House of the Turtles and several sculptures representing Chaac, the God of Rain. The Palace was recently found to be used for harvesting a number of medicinal plants. And the entrance is perfectly aligned with Venus.

  • History

Uxmal was home to about 20,000 Mayans. While buildings like the Nunnery Quadrangle were used for commoners to socialize, the Governor’s Palace was decorated in ornate mosaics deeming it a sacred place. It is accessed by three separate stairways and capped off with an expansive terrace.

  • Surrounding Pyramids

The stories of the surrounding pyramids are just as exciting as the tales of the Governor’s Palace. The towering Pyramid of the Magician was said to built overnight by an enchanted dwarf who then became the city’s ruler.

One of the most exciting opportunities when visiting Uxmal is climbing to the top of the ancient steps. Most of the area’s ancient ruins are off-limits to climbing or walking on, so if you’re looking for an authentic experience, Uxmal should make your list.
